Introducing Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is my favorite celebration and it is the one I miss celebrating the most since I am abroad. There is a story that my mother told me why we celebrate the Chinese New Year. It is the most important celebration to Chinese people. We prepare the celebrating for one month before. It does not only mean a new year is coming, but it is a good chance to let whole families stay together and visit friends.
Chinese New Year is also called GuoNian. It had a story that my mother told me when I was young. Guo means pass and Nian means year in Chinese. My mother said, a long time ago, there was a monster called Nian. He was very strong but evil. A poison was in the area around him that we called Sui. He killed people and ate them. Every time he was coming, Chinese people were afraid of him. The bravest man could not kill him. One day, Nian was coming again. People used fireworks to fight with him. Astoundingly, Nian was afraid of the sound of fireworks and ran away. So, Chinese people celebrate the day that they beat Nian every year.
Traditionally, Chinese will shoot the fireworks and eat the most delicious food to celebrate New Year, like dumplings, fish and so on. The most respected old man will prepare red packets and put some money in it, he will give the red packets to children that we called YaSui. It will protect children against the poison around Nian. For now, Chinese will celebrate the New Year on the eve. We will not sleep until past the midnight, that means Nian is passed and we can live well. This behavior is like Christmas Eve.
We usually begin to prepare celebrating New Year one month early. We clean the yard and every room. We buy fireworks, spring festival scrolls, and also buy snacks, candies, fruits, meats, fish and flour for the New Year’s Eve. Women will prepare pickles and other good food to share with neighborhood. Children would help parents put the spring festival scrolls on the outside door. The scrolls usually writes some good and lucky words. Fu means luck. We will put the Fu upside down on the door. It means luck will be coming.
On the New Year’s Eve, my family will be together from all parts of China. My uncle will bring his family to our home, because my father has the seniority in the family. Women will prepare the food in the morning on the day before New Year. Men will talk about the work of the whole year and something important in the past year. We have a family reunion dinner and watch the Spring Festival Gala on television. At midnight, young men will shoot fireworks and women will cook dumplings. There are many tastes, everyone can choose his or her flavor. We think eating dumplings on the New Year’s Eve is a good start for a new year. Everyone will eat dumplings, even someone who is not hungry.
Next day in the morning, the young men and children will get up early and wait outside of my parents’ room. When they get up, we will say propitious words in accordance with the order of seniority. My parents will give the red packets to all the children. After that, my parents will stay at home and all the young people and children will go to the temple fair. There are many delicious food and snacks. There used to have many shows by folk acrobatic artists. They will play dragon dance, lion dance and some difficult skill shows that people think that are amazing. On the following days, my parents will bring us separately to visit their friends. My parents will give the red packets to their children and we could get the red packets from my parents’ friends too.
In conclusion, Chinese New Year is my favorite celebration. It is a good chance to stay with families and eat the most delicious food. I miss the way that families are working together to celebrate Chinese New Year.
